From Roots to Roots: Plant Roots. Grassroots. Hair Roots.
Afrodisiac Naturals is a Black and Queer woman-owned social enterprise rooted in care for hair, for land, and for community. With over 15 years in the business and more than a decade of specially formulating clean, effective products for Afro-textured hair in colder climates, everything we do grows from the soil up.
When I say roots to roots, I mean it. The ingredients in our product line are grown in a garden hosted by Token Naturals and crafted with care. Our formulas are designed with intention, using plant-based ingredients that actually work, because Afro hair deserves more than guesswork and generic options. We know the challenges of dry, cold climates and we build our products to protect, restore, and nourish.
Afrodisiac started as a small salon space and has grown into something much deeper. We've always been about the people. Black folks, Queer folks, creatives, entrepreneurs, and anyone looking for space to be seen and celebrated. We’ve organized events like the Africa Day Celebration in 2022, which helped inspire the City of Edmonton to develop a park in an underserved inner-city area. We’ve shown up with the Caribbean tent at Heritage Days, danced through Jab Jab in Cariwest, and created platforms like the Afrodisiac Market and the Afrodisiac Loc Festival to amplify our voices and our culture.
Our space has held stories and sound. From “Tale of Two Bundles” by Kijo Gatama and Thou Art Here Theatre, to rehearsals from some of Edmonton’s most loved artists like 5 Artists One Love, Arlo Maverick, Timothy Noel and the Rear Views, Mel Afrique, and Martin Kerr. Afrodisiac has become a place where art, music, and movement find room to breathe.
Through it all, we remain a safe space. We protect our people. We honor natural hair. We stay grounded in the land and the culture that raised us. Whether it’s a twist cream, a gathering, a story, or a stage. Afrodisiac is about reclaiming beauty, building legacy, and growing life from root to root.
